Chapter 9

The chill would not leave Nicai, and she recalled the spirit. As much as she tried to convince herself that had only been a nightmare and nothing more, she remained frightened and unnerved.

“Murro, I’ll take that ride now if you are willing,” she murmured.

“Nicai, that probably is not the wisest of decisions,” he scolded.

“Will you refuse me then? Because I will climb out of this window and fall to the ground, and if I break my legs, I will have no choice but to crawl to the nearest nest. Not that I know where the nearest nest is, but…”

Murro muttered something under his fiery breath, and she finally thawed some.

“What was that?” she asked innocently. “I could not hear you clearly.”

“You have no right to treat me as your personal flier and nothing more,” he retorted.

“I… I-I…” Nicai sputtered. “That is not what I meant—Do you want me to ask? I’ll beg. I will fall to my knees, and on purpose this time, and grovel at your greatness.”

“Nicai.”

She awkwardly went down on one knee and then the other. After clasping her hands together, she beat them against her breast. “Oh, Murro, please, you majestic dragon, won’t you please—”

She gaped at him and blinked several times. “I’m not mocking,” she said as she struggled to stand. “I mean it. You really are a majestic dragon, and I never meant to take you for granted. I just want to see a dragon’s nest, to see the eggs. I only want to help.”

“You should be helping yourself,” Murro grumbled. “That’s my point.”

“Please, let’s not argue,” Nicai cried. “I want to feel useful again. I don’t want to be stuck in the castle. At the very least, I want to return home.”

“Humans aren’t meant to live in caves.”

"Oh, so now you want to kick me out and make me homeless. Did you get too used to me not being around?" Nicai asked. Her head was swimming, and she could not tell when he was being serious from when he was teasing her.

“You must realize that you have a problem,” Murro said, “and it all came to light when we saw Nagra fall out of the sky.”

“What problem is that?” she asked curiously, grateful that his tone was more serious now. Whatever point he was addressing now, he meant it.

"Your wanting to be the hero, the savior of the dragons. No. The savior of Burning Havens."

She couldn’t help smiling a little.

“Why are you looking so happy?” Murro asked suspiciously.

“Because Koll just promised me we would be known as heroes, as legends even.”

Murro muttered something again. “He would tell you that, and you would love it. You two are going to get each other killed.”

“And you and Ivna?” Nicai asked.

As much as she wished to leave at once, she wanted to be on friendly terms again with Murro. Had her coma affected him that badly that it could destroy their bond? That
